Red Horse Hoof Care

Field Paste
Antimicrobial sole and frog dressing

Field Paste is an anti-thrush paste for horses which are mainly field-kept. It has a thick consistency which offers greater 'staying power' as it remains in contact with the affected areas longer than other thrush treatments. It is designed to remain in the collateral grooves, central sulcus and on the sole for longer periods of time and continue having an effect against microbes. It helps prevent mud, faeces and other contaminants coming in contact with the hoof.

It was originally developed for brood stock that very rarely had their feet picked out. It has a slightly lower concentration of antimicrobial substances in it than Sole Paint but has a longer residual effect.

Too thick to be painted on, Field Paste should be applied with a gloved hand. For stabled horses it is often better to use Sole Paint (hyperlink), which is easier to apply, and bedding does not adhere to it.

Field Paste is effective for
• Thrush
• White line health (where white line is actually degraded look at Artimud or Hoof-Stuff instead)
• Hoof hardening
• General sole and frog health

Field Paste contains:
• Green french clay - an antimicrobial clay which gives the putty the perfect consistency.
• Bio-active honey - for its antimicrobial qualities and ability to make the putty sticky.
• Zinc oxide - a powerful, yet harmless antimicrobial powder.
• Tea tree oil - an essential oil well known for its bacteria and fungus fighting abilities.
• Eucalyptus oil - as well as being an effective antimicrobial, this essential oil assists in the toughening of weakened structures.
• Zinc Sulphate - a powerful antimicrobial which is also used in feed supplements.

All the ingredients in Field Paste either have an antimicrobial effect or improve the consistency and hence the longevity of its effect.

Hoof-Stuff
An antimicrobial hoof pack for plugging holes and cracks in equine hooves

Containing only naturally occurring ingredients Hoof-Stuff is non-toxic, safe and easy to use. Its ability to stay in crevices due to its fibrous content allows it to act for longer than other treatments. Hoof-Stuff has been found useful for seedy toe, white line disease, deep central sulcus separation, abscess cavities, grass cracks among other issues. Its active ingredients act not only to eliminate bacteria and fungus but also promote healing and restoration of healthy tissue.

Honey makes a fantastic base for this product increasing its healing and antimicrobial powers and aiding adhesion into the hole.

Hoof-Stuff is advised for use in deeper, tighter holes in the hooves where it is deemed fabric would stay. With shallower holes Artimud is advised instead.

Hoof-Stuff contains the following ingredients:
• Unpasteurised honey, for its antimicrobial and healing properties but also to give the product a good, sticky consistency.
• Zinc oxide, again for its antimicrobial nature and ability to aid the healing process.
• Natural fibres, to keep the other ingredients in place in cavities and to provide 'beneficial pressure' to the inside of them and promote regrowth of healthy tissue.

Nothing is added just to bulk the product out or make it cheaper or easier to produce. Every ingredient has a role in solving the problem of infection in deep cracks in hooves.

Artimud
A clay-based antimicrobial hoof putty.

Trials showed that although Hoof-Stuff was brilliant in deeper cracks and crevices in the hoof it did not stay in shallower cracks and on the surface of the hoof. The only thing that consistently stuck to the areas of the foot we were trying to treat was in fact mud! So we created something similar that had a beneficial rather than detrimental effect - thus Artimud was born.

Artimud can be smoothed, rolled, squashed, spread and moulded to stay in the area it is applied to, so its active antimicrobial and healing agents can sort out the problem.

It is useful in the treatment of all the same problems as Hoof Stuff particularly in shallower white line separations, frog clefts, external cracks, thrush etc. (although not as effective in deeper, anaerobic cracks).

Use Artimud in shallower, more open holes/ cracks and Hoof-Stuff in deeper, tighter ones.

Artimud contains:
• Green french clay - an antimicrobial clay which gives the putty the perfect consistency.
• Bio-active honey - for its antimicrobial qualities and ability to make the putty sticky.
• Zinc oxide - a powerful yet harmless antimicrobial powder
• Eucalyptus oil - as well as being a highly effective antimicrobial, this essential oil assists in the toughening of weakened structures.
All the ingredients in Artimud are there to either have an antimicrobial effect or to improve the consistency and hence the longevity of its effect.

Tea tree oil has been cut out of the formula as in very rare occasions horses can have an allergic reaction to it. In anaerobic situations it can also detrimentally affect 'good' bacteria in the hoof.

Sole Cleanse
Zinc sulphate and eucalyptus-based thrush buster spray.

Sole Cleanse has remarkable effectiveness, without any of the necrotising effects of traditional treatments such as borax, bleaches, peroxide and Stockholm tar. It is not only effective against invasive microbes but it also acts to toughen horn tissue and has no detrimental effects on the sole unlike many commonly used anti-thrush remedies. The main antimicrobial ingredient is zinc sulphate which can be found in many nutritional supplements, reflecting how non-toxic it is!
Sole Cleanse not only helps to destroy the microbes producing the thrush but also helps promote the re-growth of healthy tissue, rather than producing more dead tissue for the thrush to re-grow on.

Sole Cleanse Spray is for more regular treatment of the foot. Once weekly for thrush-prone horses or daily until symptoms abate for established thrush is often sufficient although it is so gentle and economical that many customers use it daily "Just in case!". It is provided in a convenient 500 ml spray and will often stop thrush in just a few treatments. It has also been found useful in the treatments of white line disease and other crevices in the horses foot. We now have 1 litre and bigger refills available - without spray heads to make it even better value!

Sole Cleanse contains:
• Zinc sulphate, a powerful yet safe antibacterial and antifungal ingredient. Eucalyptus Oil - also well known for its antimicrobial qualities, this essential oil helps to eliminate thrush and condition the sole.

All in a water base so that it can be conveniently sprayed onto the feet after picking out.

Sole Paint
A paint-on sole conditioner especially helpful for thrush in stabled horses.

Sole Paint has a somewhat sticky consistency similar to HoneyHeal but is thin enough to be painted onto the underside of the hoof and frog. We designed it when we realised that HoneyHeal, despite not having specific antifungal ingredients was nearly as effective at treating thrush as Sole Cleanse Spray due to its ability to stay in contact with the treatment area longer (and the honey in it!). However it didn't go very far so we needed another product which combined cost-effectiveness with maximum efficacy.

Due to it being a paint we can make it with a much higher concentration of Zinc sulphate and honey; and add zinc oxide, eucalyptus and tea tree oil to give it a very powerful effect. We recommend Sole Paint for stubborn thrush infections that can be treated at least weekly.
Sole Paint contains:

All the ingredients in Sole Paint are there to either have an antimicrobial effect or to improve the consistency and hence the longevity of its effect.

Stronghorn
Spray-on hoof hardener

Many owners have concerns that some of the ingredients in hoof-hardeners may actually be detrimental to the structure of their horses’ feet. In addition, they are fed up with paint-on hoof hardeners in narrow-based bottles which knock over easily.

So we have made Stronghorn in a spray-on form using only safe ingredients (MSM, zinc sulphate essential oils and weak citric acid). It also doubles as a very effective antimicrobial product.

Stronghorn is designed to nourish and improve the quality of the horn as well as make it harder making it far better for the feet in the long term

Stronghorn contains:
• Zinc sulphate
• MSM
• Essential oils
• Citric acid
