Probiotics are defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as 'live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host'. The reference to ‘adequate amounts’ is important as although products can correctly be described as containing probiotics, they will be ineffective unless present in sufficient concentrations. Being living organisms, they must be still active at the time the product is fed, and be in a form able to survive the stomach’s high acidity. Originally developed for veterinary products, probiotics in the Equine Premium range are specifically developed to survive transit through the gut and contain no known prohibited substances as defined by the Jockey Club and the FEI.
The Protexin Equine Premium range contains high quality probiotics along with Protexin’s unique Preplex prebiotic, a food source that nourishes the friendly bacteria and supports beneficial bacterial growth. The Equine Premium range comprises four products: Acid Ease, Gut Balancer, Quick Fix and Recover Aid.

It is ideal for horses that are poor doers, as well as stabled horses that compete at any level, and veterans. It helps ensure the gut microflora are optimised, enabling the horse to get maximum benefit from his diet, and to provide support for the immune system.
Containing only Protexin probiotic and Preplex prebiotic on a grass meal-based powder, Gut Balancer is the ideal complement to any dietary regime to help ensure everyday good health.
Available in 300g, 700g, 3kg and 6kg tubs. 300g is typically one month’s supply for a horse on maintenance dose.

A highly concentrated probiotic paste flavoured with peppermint to help maintain digestive function over periods of stress such as travel or worming
Equine Premium Quick Fix is a short course of highly concentrated probiotic paste which helps calm horses in stressful situations, such as travel or to settle the horse prior to competition. It also helps re-establish beneficial gut flora following treatment with wormers or antibiotics. For new-born foals, it assists in establishing microflora in the sterile gut after birth, and preventing foal ‘scour’.
Quick Fix is peppermint flavoured to encourage acceptance and is presented in a spin-ring/dial a dose syringe. As well as the Protexin probiotic, it includes Preplex prebiotic to help the probiotic organisms grow more effectively.
Available in a 30ml syringe. For re-establishment of gut microflora, dose 5ml/day for 6 days. To calm a horse before competition, give 10ml the day before, 10ml first thing in the morning and 10ml 1.5hours before competing.

A 14-day course of a palatable powder to encourage appetite and recovery or to prepare for competition or racing
Equine Premium Recover Aid is a short course to aid recovery following strenuous exertion, a long journey, a viral illness or hospitalisation. It can also be used for 10 days prior to and the few days following racing or competition to help ensure the horse is on top form.
Recover Aid’s carefully balanced ingredients include:
- High dose B group vitamins to help build the blood profile, bolster immunity and support liver function
- Extract of milk thistle (Silybin) to help cleanse the liver and increase function and efficiency
- Vitamins C and E, giving an antioxidant effect and protecting cell structures
- Protexin probiotic and Preplex prebiotic to help restore the microflora balance, aiding efficient digestion and immunity
These active ingredients are flavoured with dandelion, a plant sought by many horses when they are unwell, and one which they find very palatable.

Equine Premium Acid Ease is a high fibre, probiotic antacid pellet that helps reduce the incidence and severity of the gastric ulceration that can often follow high cereal diets, exercise and stress. It should be used to help horses that:
- Display crib-biting or windsucking, which can be symptoms of gastritis
- Develop poor coat or condition, especially if the onset is sudden or unusual
- Become irritable when girthing up
- Show a lack of enthusiasm when asked to work
- Have a tendency to be cold-backed
- Have loose stools
The product has been tested at Lambourn and at The Royal Veterinary College, and has been shown to reduce gastric ulcers by 50%, and the severity of remaining ulcers by around 30%.
Acid Ease contains naturally soothing ingredients:
- Calcium and magnesium carbonates which act as antacids
- Kaolin, a coating agents to help soothe inflammation
- Protexin probiotic and Preplex prebiotic to help restore the gut microflora balance, aiding efficient digestion and immunity
